Woman, confinement and virtue: the continuity of colonial paradigms in the Republican era

In the Hispanic world, the life of women has been determined by the idea of honor and sexual purity as an important element from the Colonial life. This element was relevant after independence and liberalism too. Therefore, in the first Ecuadorian Republic, during the nineteenth century and early twentieth centuries, the model of feminine holiness extolled the virginity above the social ideal of the married woman and mother, more common in the everyday life. This essay analyzes the historical and social network and the economic and cultural implications of the constitution of the canon of female sanctity on the nineteenth century. The enssay compares three different periods: European Feudalism, the Colonia in Audiencia de Quito and the Liberalism in the Ecuadorian Republic.
En el ámbito hispánico, la dinámica de la cotidianidad de la vida de las mujeres ha estado determinada por la idea del honor y la pureza sexual como un bien importante desde el período virreinal. Este elemento no dejó de tener relevancia luego de la independencia ni con el advenimiento del liberalismo. Por ello, durante el siglo XIX e inicios del XX, en la joven República del Ecuador, se difundió un modelo de santidad femenino que exaltaba la virginidad por encima del ideal social de la mujer casada y madre, más común en la realidad cotidiana. En este ensayo se analiza el entramado histórico-social y las implicaciones económicas y culturales de la constitución del canon de santidad femenino del siglo XIX. Para ello, comparamos tres períodos distintos: el Feudalismo en Europa, la etapa virreinal en la Audiencia de Quito y el liberalismo en el Ecuador republicano.
