Mantel-Debreu-Sonnenschein theorem: its consequences for economic theory and its teaching

Description: This article explains that the teaching of microeconomics can be understood in two components: from the agents and their decision-making to the general equilibrium and the first welfare theorem; and, the limits of the competitive market and the various market failures. It is argued that it is necessary to add a third stage to the teaching of microeconomics, based fundamentally on the Mantel-Debreu-Sonnenschein theorem and its consequences. It is argued that this theorem indicates the limits of neoclassical microeconomics, the need to incorporate institutional elements in macroeconomic analysis, and to mark distances with respect to the structure of the so-called hard sciences.
En el presente artículo se explica que se puede entender la enseñanza de la microeconomía en dos componentes: desde los agentes y su toma de decisiones hasta el equilibrio general y el primer teorema del bienestar; y, los límites del mercado competitivo y las diversas fallas de mercado. Se argumenta que es necesario añadir una tercera etapa a la enseñanza de la microeconomía, basada fundamentalmente en el teorema de Mantel-Debreu-Sonnenschein y en sus consecuencias. Se argumenta que este teorema señala los límites de la microeconomía neoclásica, la necesidad de incorporar elementos institucionales en el análisis macroeconómico, y en marcar distancias respecto de la estructura de las llamadas ciencias duras.
