Leadership and communication, fundamental competences for a Project Director

This article analyzes the importance of leadership and communication in the role of the project manager. For this purpose, it is discussed the incidence of these competencies at the management levels, their characteristics and implications in the role of the project manager are identified, and some nuances with which they are presented in Latin America are distinguished. The literature reviewed shows that the behavior of the project manager associated with leadership and communication is crucial to ensure management effectiveness and, in addition, significantly affect the success of the project. It is concluded, therefore, that the development of these competences should be encouraged in the directors, as well as the ability to adapt them according to the context in which the project is executed.
El presente artículo analiza la importancia del liderazgo y la comunicación en la función del director de proyectos. Para tal efecto, se discute sobre la incidencia de estas competencias en los niveles de dirección, se identifican sus características e implicaciones en el rol del director de proyectos y se distinguen algunos matices con que se presentan en América Latina. La literatura revisada muestra que los comportamientos del director de proyecto asociados al liderazgo y a la comunicación son cruciales para asegurar la eficacia en la gestión y, además, afectan de manera significativa al éxito del proyecto. Se concluye, por lo tanto, que debe propiciarse el desarrollo de estas competencias en los directores, así como la capacidad de adaptarlas en función del contexto en el que se ejecuta el proyecto.
