Description

Chronic irritability is defined as a low threshold to experience frustration and is usually manifested through being easily annoyed by others, touchiness, anger and temper outbursts. Chronic irritability can appear early in life and is a predictor of long-term psychosocial adversity; yet, the diagnostic status of irritability is a matter of intense debate (Leibenluft, 2011). Depending on the stringency of threshold, prevalence rates range from 3% for severe, chronic irritability strictly defined in the Great Smoky Mountain study (Brotman et al., 2006) to 20% in the Isle of Wight study (Pickles et al., 2010).
