Description

Sewage sludge is a by-product of primary and secondary treatment of wastewater and requires treatment to reduce the bulk by removing water content, stabilise the putrescible organic substrates contained in sludge and condition the product to meet management and recycling regulations (Appels et al., 2008). The social, economic and environmental issues surrounding the production of sewage sludge and the pressure from authorities has incentivised the development of advanced technologies to optimise its energetic and disposal features.
