Globally, the total yield descended from aqua cultural production has more than doubled between 1986 and 1996. Now, more than one fourth of consumable fish products and 23 % of the shrimp production come from aquaculture. The breeding of shrimps on a large scale is a recent phenomenon, mainly stimulated by a strong demand on Japanese, European and American markets.
