Description

The Agriculture Innovation Systems (AIS) have been tackled from different perspectives but most of them are empirical studies. Only few studies have emerged in the mainstream Innovation Systems (IS) analysis. Moreover, IS addresses from a holistic standpoint the importance of the institutional context and the knowledge managed by its stakeholders as enablers or constrainers to promote any technological change. The most important recent approach of Agricultural Innovation Systems is related to ?the switch? from simplistic linear approaches to transfer knowledge from research and development (R&D) through extension services to farmers, to understand that AIS as a complex system. Moreover, that system is comprised by a network of different actors, interactions, functions, and roles where knowledge is the key element to foster the technological change. The AIS in developed and developing countries have different structures, functions and systemic problems according to how those stakeholders interact, use and share their knowledge. The main purpose of this project is to establish a comparison and contrast between AIS in four developing countries Uganda, Ethiopia, Bolivia and Peru by a potato innovation system analysis. Netherlands is the country selected as a developed country, based on a case study of caring for hens? agri-food system called Rondeel. In both cases, the qualitative methods used in this project will analyse the main structural, and functional factors; the systemic problems which enable or constrain the performance of AIS; and their correspondent systemic instruments. The analysis sets out identify who is involved in those AIS networks, their roles, and what knowledge they manage along the AIS in each type of country. Moreover, this document from different authors? approaches proposes foundations to generate knowledge that enriches the formulation of public policy of Innovation Systems. This project is done from post-positivist philosophical standpoint using qualitative research based on a qualitative desktop research regarding different papers, journals, academic researches, government reports, web pages and books.
