This doctoral thesis seeks to make operational the notion of ?sustainability?. Whereas ?weak? sustainability, although difficult to compute, can be clearly defined and has a generally agreed meaning, ?strong? sustainability requires computing and choosing physical indicators and indexes over which there is as yet no agreement.
