The undeniable interaction between environmental and investment protection calls for the incorporation of both areas of international law within IIAs. Moreover it urges the proactive participation of arbitral tribunals in the decision making process. Arbitrators should apply international environmental principles and include them in their awards. The goal of sustainable development can only be achieved by the active participation of all agents involved: States, corporations, society, decisionmakers, NGOs, IOs, etc.
