Description

Summer overheating is a growing issue in urban areas in the UK due to increased temperatures caused by global warming and the Urban Heat Island effect. Since a large percentage of the current non-commercial building stock in the UK is aged, retrofitting would be necessary to meet the demand of office buildings while adapting to a warmer climate. The main objective is to investigate the effectiveness of passive retrofit strategies to reduce summer overheating in a Naturally Ventilated office buildings located in areas affected by the Urban Heat Island effect (UHI). A case study approach is adopted, by considering a 1930s building located in Central London, which is experiencing overheating problems. The real monitored indoor air temperature data collected in summer was analysed under the overheating criteria from CIBSE Guide-A and CIBSE TM52. The case study overheated based on both criteria.
