A solid body subjected to stress emits transient elastic waves due to several causes such as moving dislocations, crack growth, sliding grain boundaries and corrosion. This phenomena is known as acoustic emission. It can be measured with proper instrumentation and is used to give an idea of the current structural condition of a structure which is to be evaluated.
