Description

The electrical power systems have operated in the same way for the last 60 years and their design was based on a one-way path from the generation to final customers. However, with the presence of Embedded Generators and Smart Grids, the actual distribution systems have become an active and complex structure where real and reactive power can flow in both directions and where the connection between users and grid plays a key role for handling this two-way flow. The present dissertation carried out a study about the connection between Embedded Generators and the Grid considering relevant Smart Grid aids, focused on rural farms with low wind and solar power generation. The study was based on the data obtained from a farm located near Newcastle Upon Tyne which is using electrical power from the grid and is generating wind and photovoltaic power. The design of the real network was developed in ERACS by considering all the relevant elements such as transformers, distribution lines, normal open points, and embedded generators. Load flow and short-circuit analysis were performed in order to verify the proper operation of the system and for rating the protective devices correctly (switchgears). At the end, a proper design was achieved and the results showed the correct operation of this model under established parameters. Particularly, it was verified that voltages are within statutory limits, power supplied does not exceed the transformers capacity, fed loads meet the demand requirement, currents flowing through the lines do not overpass the lines capacity, and the network efficiency remains high in all the cases.
