El Chimborazo entre las aproximaciones científicas y culturales de Alexander von Humboldt (1802-1805) y Edward Whymper (1880-1892) [Estudios]

Description: This article analyzes the scientific and cultural representations made by Alexander von Humboldt and Edward Whymper about the Chimborazo Volcano. In the case of Humboldt, we study the profile of the mountain that he designed in 1805, in order to show the vertical distribution of plants and nature as a whole. As for Whymper, we study his ascent to the snow-capped mountain in 1880, as well as his physiological and cartographic work in the high Andes of Ecuador. Both representations are seen as models of creation of nature involving scientific, aesthetic, and artistic approaches. These experiences are compared to their influence on the scientific exploration and mountaineering activities of the 19th century.
Este artículo analiza las representaciones científicas y culturales de Alexander von Humboldt y Edward Whymper sobre el Chimborazo. En el caso de Humboldt, se estudia el perfil que elaboró de la montaña para escenificar la distribución vertical de las plantas y la naturaleza como una totalidad, en 1805. En cuanto a Whymper, se estudia su ascenso al nevado en 1880, su trabajo fisiológico y cartográfico en los altos Andes del Ecuador. Ambas representaciones son vistas como modelos de creación de lo natural, donde intervienen encuadres científicos, estéticos y artísticos. Se comparan esas experiencias y su influencia en la exploración científica y el montañismo del siglo XIX.
