This article is a case study of the emergence of the intellectual in Spanish American: the trajectory of Alfonso Reyes. In Latin America modernity and the beginnings of the 20th Century contributed to circumstances and historical processes that permitted the 19th Century literates to progressively transform into intellectual: to be exact a ‘transitional intellectual’. This study looks at some of the dynamics that validated the intellectual as a new social actor during the period studied. The public visibility as it was never before, placed thinkers, and the use of means of communication of the time and the cultural elements like books and magazines, allowing that they be turned into public figures and to obtain some of their objectives.
Este artículo estudia la emergencia del ‘intelectual’ en Hispanoamérica a través de un estudio de caso: la trayectoria de Alfonso Reyes. En América Latina la modernidad finisecular y de principios del siglo XX aportó circunstancias y procesos históricos que permitieron que el letrado decimonónico se transformase progresivamente en un ‘intelectual’; más exactamente en un ‘intelectual de transición’. También se estudian algunas de las dinámicas que permitieron que el ‘intelectual’ se posicionase como un nuevo actor social durante el período en estudio. La visibilidad pública que, como nunca antes, habían tenido los hombres de pensamiento y el uso que hicieron de los medios de comunicación de la época y de artefactos culturales como el libro y las revistas, les permitió convertirse en figuras públicas y alcanzar algunos de sus objetivos.
