Introducción: Ante la preocupación en el campo científico por la resistencia cada vez mayor del organismo a ciertos fármacos, las plantas medicinales y aromáticas se han abierto un importante camino en el tratamiento de enfermedades, y las infecciones en boca no son la excepción. El objetivo de esta revisión de literatura fue analizar información de relevancia acerca de la Hierba Luisa (Cymbopogon Citratus) y su efecto antimicótico en cavidad bucal. Materiales y métodos: Se realizo una búsqueda en bases de datos electrónica como Google Scholar, SciELO, Taylor and Francis, Web of Science, Scopus y Cochrane usando los operadores boleanos OR, AND y NOT, para obtener referencias relevantes para su selección. Discusión: El aceite esencial de Hierba Luisa (Cymbopogon Citratus) presenta una gran acción antifúngica contra la infección por hongos en la cavidad bucal. Principalmente cuando su concentración se encuentra sobre el 50% y actúa también sobre la estructura acrílica de prótesis dentales. Conclusiones: El aceite esencial de Hierba Luisa (Cymbopogon Citratus) es la mejor alternativa de medicina natural para tratar las infecciones por hongos en la cavidad bucal.
Introduction: In response to the concern in the scientific field about the increasing resistance of the organism to certain drugs, medicinal and aromatic plants have opened a critical path in treating diseases, and infections in the mouth are no exception. This literature review aimed to analyze relevant information about lemon verbena (Cymbopogon citratus) and its antifungal effect in the oral cavity. Materials and methods: A bibliographic search was performed in electronic databases such as Google Scholar, SciELO, Taylor & Francis, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane using the Boolean operators OR, AND and NOT to obtain relevant references for selection. Discussion: The essential oil of lemon verbena (Cymbopogon citratus) has great antifungal action against fungal infection in the oral cavity. Mainly when its concentration is higher than 50%, it also acts on the acrylic structure of dental prostheses. Conclusions: The essential oil of lemon verbena (Cymbopogon Citratus) is the best natural medicine alternative to treat fungal infections in the oral cavity.
