Redescubriendo el mundo de la literatura infantil ecuatoriana: una visión acerca de los estereotipos de género.

The current study is based on the analysis of gender stereotypes in Ecuadorian literature of children, aimed at children between the ages of 0 and 6 years. The stories analyzed on the study have had important nationwide recognition, namely “Darío Guevara Mayorga National Award”; Honor List by the International Board of Books for Young People (IBBY) –Ecuador; recognized as “The outstanding of Girándula”; and the best sold children’s stories of children in the past five years according to an important bookstore in Quito. The ten stories that were chosen were analyzed through a benchmarking list that was reproduced according to two previous studies carried out in the United States by Anderson and Hamilton (2005, p. 147), and Crisp and Hiller (2008, p. 208); which was adapted to the Ecuadorian context regard on eight interviews conducted with important representatives and leading exponents of Ecuadorian literature of children. The stories were analyzed in three categories: attitudes, actions and physical appearance; whereby it was determined if the female, male or neutral characters pertained to each category. After analyzing the stories of children, a counting was performed to determine the number of appearances of male or female characters, and the findings proved that there were more male characters in the analyzed stories, and, therefore, there were more male main characters. On the other hand, there was proof of gender equity in the attitudes and actions of both genders though the physical appearance showed a strict framing of female and male character features. The study shows that, the literature of children stories analyzed in the current study represent gender stereotypes through text and illustrations, even though they aim at embodying equity proposing themes through which boys and girls can identify themselves or easily recognize given that they relate to Ecuadorian culture and the current world state of affairs.
El presente estudio se centra en el análisis de los estereotipos de género en la literatura infantil ecuatoriana destinada a un rango de edad de cero a seis años. Las obras analizadas tuvieron reconocimiento a nivel nacional como el „Premio Nacional Darío Guevara Mayorga‟, pertenecer a la Lista de Honor de International Board of Books for Young People (IBBY)- Ecuador como „Los destacados de Girándula‟; y, por último, estar entre los cuentos infantiles más vendidos en los últimos cinco años de una importante librería de la ciudad de Quito. El análisis se realizó tomando como base una lista de cotejo utilizada en dos estudios previos realizado en Estados Unidos por Anderson y Hamilton (2005, p. 147), y Crisp y Hiller (2008, p. 208); que se adaptó al contexto ecuatoriano tomando los aportes recogidos mediante ocho entrevistas realizadas a importantes representantes y exponentes de la literatura infantil ecuatoriana. Los libros se analizaron teniendo en cuenta tres categorías: actitudes, acciones, y apariencia física; dentro de las cuáles se ubicó a personajes femeninos, masculinos o neutros dentro de cada una. Después de analizar los cuentos infantiles, se realizó un conteo del número de apariciones de personajes masculinos o femeninos, luego de lo cual se encontró que existen más personajes masculinos en los cuentos analizados, y por consiguiente más protagonistas de este género. Por otra parte, se evidenció equidad de género en las categorías de actitudes y acciones por parte de ambos géneros; aunque, la categoría de apariencia física se destacó por enmarcar estrictamente los rasgos femeninos y masculinos de los personajes. El estudio evidencia que, los cuentos de literatura infantil analizados en el presente estudio exponen estereotipos de género por medio del texto y de las ilustraciones, aunque a su vez plasman equidad proponiendo temas con los cuales los/las niños/as se puedan identificar o reconocer fácilmente porque se relacionan con la cultura ecuatoriana y con la situación del mundo actual.
