Description

Propose urban agriculture in modern conditions for Quito requires a hydro meteorological (HM) analyze and it mapping, and make a strategy to adaptation to climate change. This work aims to show that the study of: HM variables, quality and quantity of rainwater fall on the city, the kind of substrate, the irrigation, and the crop system; it permits develop a strategy to implement urban crops considering effects of climate change. The analysis of HM variables was developed by using the records of stations of local meteorological network. The quality of water rain was studied according to the punctual simple sample and the results of samples that UDLA owns. The substrates were chosen on the basis of local market, and the soil used is the most common of Quito. The selected plant species have different responds to growth due to the conditions of precipitation, temperature, and rooting depth. An experimental design which checked the growth rate of the plants selected in each of the substrates, at three points in the city was conducted. The research determined that the optimal conditions for the implementation of urban crops in terraces are from north-central zone to south zone of the city, that precipitation and temperature in the city tend to increase, therefore it would favor to expansion of the boundaries cultivations with in the city. It was determined that small vegetables are suitable for cultivation in terraces. The amount of water that precipitates could meet the water needs of crops, however extra volume that should be considered because the weather is not stable at all the time. The quality of rainwater in certain points in the city is acid and the presence of lead exceeding standards. The substrate which gave best results was based on a mixture of organic material fair ground and inert material.
