This research called "The Passion in the Convent of San Diego: San Diego, the history, the use of this convent, and the art of this place," is an analysis not only from the point of view of the constructive evolution, but how to combine the images with the religious practices that took place in that period. In the first part of this study, will be the history of the convent and for what purpose it was built. The monks who came to this convent, seeking for a place more strict and seeking for an austere life The secular that wish retrats led by priests and meditation treaties, because they were seeking for a life of spiritual and physical perfection, through prayer and selfpunishment . This convent was opened to the secular retreatants twice a year. The second part of this, investigation, is about the use of the convent, the analysis of the the themes of the murals, mainly in the sequence of the Passion of Christ. Finally I talk about the spiritual retreats, according to a book called "Universal Remedy" written by Fray Fernando de Jesus, a priest who lived during the eighteenth century, in this convent. Very little has been written about this convent and the mural paints and the spiritual exercises, which is why I decided to write on this subject, to provide a new investigation of this small but lovely convent.
Esta investigación denominada “La Pasión en el Convento de San Diego: San Diego, su historia, su uso y su arte”, es un análisis no solamente desde el punto de vista de su evolución constructiva, sino de cómo en este pequeño convento se conjugaban las imágenes con las prácticas religiosas de la época. En la primera parte de este estudio se verá la historia de este convento y con qué propósito fue construido. Los religiosos que acudieron a este convento, buscaban una vida más estricta y austera, y los seglares en busca de retiros espirituales guiados por sacerdotes y tratados de meditación, ya que deseaban acceder a una vida de perfección espiritual y corporal, mediante la oración y autocastigo. Este convento abrió sus puertas a los ejercitantes seglares dos veces al año. La segunda parte de este, se trata de los usos que le dieron a esta recoleta, aquí se profundizará en el tema de las pinturas murales, principalmente en la serie de la Pasión de Cristo. Finalmente hablo de los ejercicios espirituales, según un librito llamado “Remedio Universal”, escrito por Fray Fernando de Jesús, un religioso que vivió durante el siglo XVIII, dentro de este convento. Muy poco se ha escrito sobre este convento y sobre las pinturas y los ejercicios, es por esto que decidí escribir sobre este tema, para aportar con una nueva investigación de esta pequeña pero preciosa recolección franciscana.
