The following dissertation suggests that the inflexibility of feminist theory of the sixties, seventies and the early eighties, was crucial for the early promotion and marginalization of the work of certain artists. Therefore, this study will focus on investigating how the practice, mainly photographic of Hannah Wilke and Cindy Sherman, attains to related to the feminist discourse and theory of the sixties, seventies and eighties and how this affects the promotion of the same artists. Within the course of the study, it appears that the wish of the feminist movement of promoting a strong image of the movement, allow the promptly sponsorship of Cindy Sherman’s work, while on the other hand a marginalization of Hannah Wilke’s work is produced. At the same time, this research paper states that when the feminist theory faces the postmodernist theories, the work of Hannah Wilke can be reassessed and read in a different way. To bring out these cases of artistic validation and promotion that occurred within the American feminist movement, are essential in the Ecuadorian context, so that the emerging gender and feminist movements acknowledge the importance of achieving a bidirectional communication between the theoretical development and artistic practice.
El siguiente trabajo de investigación plantea que la rigurosidad de la teoría feminista de los años sesenta, setenta y principios de los ochenta, fue determinante tanto para la pronta promoción como para la marginalización de la obra de determinadas artistas. Así, el estudio se centrará en investigar cómo la práctica, principalmente fotográfica de Hannah Wilke y Cindy Sherman, se logra relacionar con el discurso y teoría feminista de los años sesenta, setenta y ochenta y cómo esto afecta la promoción de las mismas. Dentro del desarrollo del estudio, se evidencia que los deseos del movimiento feminista por potenciar una imagen sólida del mismo, hacen que la promoción de la obra de Cindy Sherman sea pronta, mientras que por otro lado se dé una marginalización de la obra de Hannah Wilke. Al mismo tiempo, el trabajo de investigación establece que, cuando la teoría feminista hace frente a las corrientes de pensamiento postmodernistas, la obra de Hannah Wilke puede ser revalorada y leída de una manera diferente. Poner en evidencia estos casos de promoción y valoración artística que se dieron dentro del movimiento feminista estadounidense, son imprescindibles dentro del contexto ecuatoriano; para que los nacientes movimientos feministas y de género reconozcan la importancia de lograr una articulación bidireccional entre el desarrollo teórico y la práctica artística.
