Youth, in present days, shows dissatisfaction with society and how things are. This discontent is manifested through movements and associations of young people whose purpose is to influence and be a part of changing realities in their societies. Today’s youth is faced by challenges and paradoxes, which impede their manifestation as social actors. This youth nevertheless is striving to overcome such obstacles, fighting for access to education, to jobs and advocating for democracy. Such is the example of the movements in Spain, Chile and the Arab World, to mention a few, where young people have sought every possible resource to mobilize their countries and gather support for their cause. All these recent cases contradict stereotypes assigned to the youngsters by society stereotypes such as violent and rebel youths. Furthermore, such stereotypes only serve to stigmatize and thus marginalize the young population, and institutions based on such stereotypes with the pretext to rehabilitate the problematic youth, only serve to marginalize them even more. This work, on the contrary, is against a negative view of the young person and instead promotes an image of a positive youth. That is, this work envisions the young as subject of change, calling for the establishment of channels of communication across generations and emphasizing the necessity of formal means of participation for the young.
Las juventudes de hoy en día manifiestan su descontento en la sociedad a través de movimientos y asociaciones juveniles cuyo fin es lograr influenciar y así ser partícipes de cambios estructurales en las sociedades en que viven. Los jóvenes de hoy en día, que enfrentan una serie de paradojas y desafíos que obstaculizan su manifestación como actores sociales, luchan por acceso a la educación, al trabajo y por la democracia. Así lo demuestran casos recientes como el movimiento de los Indignados en España, las protestas estudiantiles en Chile y las revueltas en contra de regímenes dictatoriales en el mundo árabe, donde jóvenes han utilizado todos los recursos a su alcance y así han logrado movilizar a países enteros, consiguiendo apoyo para su causa. Todos estos casos contradicen estereotipos asignados al joven por la sociedad, cuyas instancias supuestamente rehabilitadoras no hacen más que acentuar la marginación del joven, probando ser instituciones ineficaces. El presente trabajo contradice dichas posturas que desvalorizan al joven y más bien refuerza la imagen del mismo como sujeto de cambio, protagonista del presente, haciendo un llamado a la apertura al diálogo intergeneracional y apelando a la necesidad de que existan instancias formales de participación.
