Description

This dissertation studies the main aspects related to the control of the efficiency of a directcoupled photovoltaic (PV) system when the maximum efficiency of this system is tracked by using a DC/DC converter and two versions of the Perturb and Observe (P&O) Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm: the classic (or standard) P&O MPPT algorithm and a modified version of the same algorithm. The efficiency of a direct-coupled PV system, which could be very low due to the high dependence that PV cells have to the irradiance and temperature conditions, can be maximized by continuously tracking the maximum power point (MPP) of the system during variable conditions of irradiance and temperature. In this respect, this dissertation obtains the Simulink model of a PV system that is formed by a commercial PV module, a Buck-boost DC/DC converter and a DC load (resistor) in order to be able to evaluate the efficiency of this kind of systems when either the standard or a modified P&O MPPT algorithm are tracking the MPP during variable weather conditions.
