Smart-test Limited is a start-up diagnostic company that aims to use state-of-the-art equipment for the early detection of diseases. Ecuador?s cut flower industry has grown significantly over the last decade. This growth is due to the use of efficient harvesting techniques, along with an ideal climate to facilitate flower growth. These factors have exceedingly contributed towards the development of roses, as they dominate the Ecuadorian cut flower industry. However, cut flowers are widely affected by many different diseases which contribute towards a 30-40 per cent loss in flower production annually. The use of early diagnostic testing can significantly improve flower production, as the early detection of pathogens can initiate fast management. Unfortunately, the Ecuadorian market has limited diagnostic testing services and farmers are forced to source help from overseas. Therefore, Smart-test Limited will offer a unique in-field services to farmers whose plantations are troubled by even the most notorious plant diseases, which are not only affecting yield but also attracting more cost on remedies and control measures. Contrary to the traditional methods for disease detection used in Ecuador, such as conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and microbiology test, the company will use a small portable technological device (Genie II) that works based on Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) technique. This is a molecular technique that amplifies deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in a constant temperature and so does not require expensive, sophisticated equipment. The process takes approximately 30 minutes to run a sample, giving the most reliable result. Smart-test Limited is proposing a cost effective solution for farmers which will enable them to save ?170 ,677.80 on chemicals a year and increase annual turnover by 5 per cent. Extensive marketing will be carried out so as to effectively penetrate the market and to raise awareness about the importance of diagnostic testing. Marketing in the early years will be done primarily using field trials, workshops and face-to-face advertising which will provide effective marketing results. Like other successful investments, Smart-test Limited has an excellent management team, experienced mentors and a good unique selling proposition with limited competition. The establishment is slated to cost approximately ?67,407.47 to cover initial start-up costs and expenses for the first year. The owners of the organization will invest ?20,222.24 in total into the organization. This initial investment will be used to cover equipment, a lease and other necessary financial start-up needs as it relates to the business. The balance of ?47,185.23 will be obtained from a government loan.
El presente estudio tiene como objetivo analizar la factibilidad de comercializar un servicio de diagn?stico de enfermedades en rosas. El mercado de rosas experimenta p?rdida en producci?n debido a infecci?n del cultivo con hongos fitopat?genos. El uso del diagn?stico temprano de enfermedades podr?a aumentar la producci?n de flores ya que el diagn?stico temprano permitir?a un manejo eficaz y efectivo de la enfermedad. La t?cnica molecular en la que est? basada este servicio se conoce como LAMP por sus siglas en ingles (Loop mediated isothermal amplification). Dicha t?cnica amplifica regiones de ADN o RNA a una temperatura constante. De esta manera, el proceso de detecci?n de hongos a nivel gen?tico durar?a alrededor de 30 minutos. Por medio de un an?lisis de mercado entre fincas productoras de rosas y otros tipos de flores en el Ecuador, se encontr? que los productores estar?an interesados en este tipo de servicio.
