The intensification of shrimp culture around the world has produced some negative environment effects including extensive destruction of wetlands, eutrophication of estuarine ecosystems, excessive water use and discharge of treatment chemicals, and potential for biological pollution through the inadvertent release of disease-causing organisms or non-indigenous species.
