In general, the Galapagos Islands with its openness to mainland Ecuador, have been slowly adapting to the changes that have been generated over the past 40 years. The significant increase of the population, climate changes, invasive species and increased demand for food products have all affected the current status of the Islands. In San Cristobal, agriculture is especially vulnerable as a result of the changes that it has had to survive and the sector has been forgotten as local development has focused on other areas. The main objective of this study is to determine the barriers to agriculture that exist in San Cristobal, which have hampered the implementation of sustainable agriculture and created nonconformity in farmers and entities related to this sector. This study captures the farmers’ views of the barriers, analyzing the barriers from the official point-of-view and contains an exploratory analysis of the political aspects.
En general, las Islas Galápagos con su apertura al Ecuador continental, se han ido adaptando lentamente a los cambios que se han generado durante los últimos 40 años: el notorio incremento de la población, variaciones climatológicas, incremento de especies invasoras y demanda de productos alimenticios ha afectado el estado actual de las Islas. En la isla San Cristóbal, el sector agrícola es el más vulnerable a consecuencia de estos cambios porque ha tenido que subsistir y permanecer en el olvido, contra el desarrollo de otros sectores. El objetivo de este estudio es determinar las barreras de la agricultura que existe en San Cristóbal, las cuales han obstaculizado la aplicación de una agricultura sustentable y ha creado desconformidad a los agricultores y entidades relacionadas con este sector. Capturando las opiniones de los agricultores y autoridades acerca de las barreras existentes, se hace un análisis exploratorio de los las implicaciones a las políticas de manejo del sector agrícola.
